Prevention Is the Best Way to Avoid Dog Bites

That's why there are millions of dog bites that occur in the United States every year, and that's why approximately one million people who are bitten by dogs every year need some form of medical care.  The worst part of this notion is that the majority of those who are injured by dog bites are children.  Therefore, there are several efforts underway to educate the public regarding dogs and how to avoid dog bites, and Las Vegas is no different.  

KVBC has a piece on its Web site that's an interview with a highly qualified dog trainer, and in it he imparts some valuable advice:

"Sophia Choi: How should people approach a dog that they don't know?

Officer Cassell: The bottom line is you shouldn't. The best thing to do is find the owner of the dog. Ask the owner if it's okay and then ask how he wants to introduce that particular dog to that particular child. When at all possible, take the dog to the child rather than taking the child to the dog. That way, the dog's personal space is not being invaded. Extend your hand either palm up or palm down, whichever way is comfortable for you is good. Sometimes they say close your fist so if the dog does bite you, you don't get your finger bit. The biggest thing is your body language; it conveys to the dog that you're not a threat. If you walk up and you're tense and you're nervous, the dog is going to sense that."
