Driving in and around Las Vegas is an activity that involves a high degree of risk, especially at 2 in the morning. However, laws are in place that are designed to dictate how people are to act when they are involved in a Nevada car accident, and when someone flees the scene it only makes the situation unnecessarily complicated. Tragically, that appears to be the case with a woman who lost her life in a Las Vegas hit-and-run accident that occurred last week. The driver has been identified after fleeing the scene but not apprehended.
According to police, this fatal Las Vegas hit-and-run accident occurred last Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Blue Diamond Road. The driver of a BMW, since identified as Natalie Dawn Dubuisson, rear-ended a pickup truck, and as a result of that impact the pickup truck crashed into an SUV, causing it to roll. A female passenger was ejected from the SUV and died as a result of the crash. The BMW driver fled the scene and police are still searching for her.
First and foremost, we'd like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed. Losing a life in this manner is always tragic, especially when it becomes a criminal investigation. We hope justice is served in this case. In addition, this Las Vegas hit-and-run accident will now become part of the overall statistics regarding Nevada car accidents. Every year, thousands of these crashes take place, and approximately 400 people are killed as a result.
Generally, the most difficult part of any hit-and-run investigation is identifying the driver. Now that this has been done, it seems somewhat likely that she will be apprehended. If or when this happens, she will clearly face serious criminal charges. She could also face a Nevada wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of the woman who was killed. If such a claim is filed and is successful, the family could be awarded damages that compensate them for their medical, funeral and burial costs as well as their lost income and loss of companionship.
