According to local police, the latest fatal Las Vegas bicycle accident occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Friday when a 50-year-old North Las Vegas woman was riding her bicycle on Craig Road near Scott Robinson Boulevard. The unidentified woman was on the sidewalk and crossing the private driveway of a commercial parking lot at the same time that the driver of a Toyota truck was pulling out of the parking lot and attempting to turn right onto Craig Road. The truck hit the bicyclist and pinned her under the vehicle. She was killed at the scene.
First and foremost, we'd like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed. Losing a life in such a sudden and violent manner is always a tragedy. In addition, this North Las Vegas bicycle accident is the eight fatal traffic collision in the city so far this year, and it will ultimately become part of the overall statistics regarding bicycle accidents nationwide. Generally, someone is killed in a bicycle accident every six hours across the United States, and the vast majority of deaths are attributed to head trauma.
While no charges have been filed, the conclusion of that inquiry will not prevent the family of the woman who was killed from filing a Nevada wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the truck if that driver was negligent. If such a case was filed and was successful, it could lead to an award of damages that include compensation for medical, funeral and burial costs as well as lost income and loss of companionship.
