Icy Weather Leads to Rollover, Injures One

Las Vegas ice rolloverIce-related crashes are not common in Las Vegas, but the recent plunge in temperature led to snowy and icy roads and resulted in a rollover accident at East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Pecos Road, according to Las Vegas Police. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for investigation for some time after the crash, but police have not released any statements regarding possible causes for the rollover.

Rollovers, Icy Roads and Injuries

Some types of weather conditions lend themselves to a higher number of accidents while some types of accidents are more likely to cause serious injuries. Icy roads and rollovers often end in serious injury to the driver or passengers. Icy roads can cause loss of friction on the part of the tires against the road. In fact, ice can create a very slick surface that can cause a driver to lose control quickly. When ice is present, it is best to wait until the roads are cleared or use special tires to prevent skidding. However, if you must drive in ice, be sure to allow plenty of stopping room and brake slowly when you must stop. Be aware that other drivers may lose control easily and begin to skid as well. Rollover accidents often occur with SUVs and light trucks. These crashes can be deadly; in fact, rollovers account for only two percent of all crashes but account for approximately one-third of all vehicle deaths.
