Pedestrian Killed in Recent Hit-and-Run Crash

A hit-and-run crash at Sahara and Eastern Avenues killed a pedestrian, according to recent reports. Marlon Duane Collins, 57, of Las Vegas, was in a crosswalk when a sedan with no headlights turned on a red light and hit him. He was pronounced dead after being transported to the University Medical Center. The car, described as a dark sedan, has not yet been located. Police are looking for the driver.

Hit-and-Run Drivers Cause High Number of Deaths

There have been a total of 22 pedestrian deaths in Las Vegas since the beginning of 2014, as well as 23 vehicle deaths and 17 passenger deaths, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. The LVMPD does not publish statistics on how many of these deaths are due to hit-and-run drivers, but according to recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there was a 13.7 percent increase nationwide in hit-and-run fatalities between 2009 and 2011, while overall traffic deaths fell by 4.5 percent during the same period. What this means is that the number of hit-and-run accidents is increasing more rapidly than even this large jump would seem to indicate. In some major cities, such as Los Angeles, hit-and-run accidents may make up half of all traffic crashes. Someone may flee the scene of an accident out of panic, but experts believe that most hit-and-run drivers flee due to lack of insurance, lack of license, prior citation or outstanding warrants, or a combination of these factors.

What Can I Do If I Am The Victim of A Hit-and-Run Driver?

Many victims of hit-and-run accidents are afraid that they cannot collect any damages for their injuries, so they fail to pursue a case. While this may be true, in some cases victims may claim damages from a third party or even from their own insurance companies under their uninsured driver coverage. In other cases, the driver may be located and may provide an avenue for compensation. The best way to learn if you have a chance of collecting compensation to pay for your medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other costs is to contact a personal injury attorney.
