Harry Reid's Legendary Eye Injury

Senator Harry Reid, D-Nevada, was injured in January in an accident he claims happened while he was working out in his bathroom. However, with his announcement of retirement, some sources have speculated that there was more to the injury than Reid, 75, made public.

Speculation that the senator was actually the victim of assault, either from parties he had made angry with his work to clean up Las Vegas or even from his own brother, who was arrested for DUI and assault, has flooded talk radio and the Internet. However, Reid's 24-hour-a-day security detail makes it unlikely the senator was the victim of an attack. Reid himself stated that he was the victim of a fall brought on when exercise equipment malfunctioned.

Product Liability: The Facts About Faulty Products

Product liability cases are brought against manufacturers and retailers when a product fails to perform as expected and causes an injury as a result. Generally, product liability cases are divided into three categories:
  • Product liability cases based on faulty design. Sometimes the very design of a product leads to tragic consequences. For example, several car seat manufacturers have been sued when infants were injured or killed by the faulty design of their products.
  • Product liability cases based on faulty manufacture. Sometimes the design of a product is sound but there are mistakes in manufacturing that lead to injuries. For example, if a toaster is put together incorrectly at the plant, then shocks the user when it is plugged in, the victim may have a case against the manufacturer.
  • Product liability cases in which the advertised uses of the product are incorrect, or there are side effects of use not disclosed to the public. In the case of drug lawsuits, it is often true that the claims are based on non-disclosure of risks associated with the use of these drugs.
Those who are the victims of an injury caused by a product may have grounds for a lawsuit against the manufacturer, the retailer or both, depending on the circumstances. It is also possible that other parties may be at fault, such as a service contractor who installed a particular item in a home.
