Hit-and-Run Crash Kills Two

A 58-year-old woman and a six-year-old girl were killed and another person injured when a driver hit them at a bus stop on Sahara Avenue, according to recent reports. The driver fled the scene but was later arrested.

The accident occurred at a bus stop near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway. Two children and an adult were hit. The adult and one of the children died and the other child is said to be in stable condition.

The vehicle was abandoned about a block from the crash scene, and witnesses said that they saw two people running into an apartment complex near Sahara and State Street. K-9 units were brought in two searches. Two individuals were detained. The driver is facing two felony charges of DUI resulting in death.

Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash Rates Increase in Recent Years

Hit-and-run crash rates have been rising for the past few years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but pedestrian hit-and-run accident rates have outpaced the general trend. Since 2009, hit-and-run crash fatalities rose from 1,274 to 1,449.

While regular crash rates declined by almost five percent, hit-and-runs increased by nearly 14 percent. Pedestrians account for about 60 percent of all hit-and-run fatalities, and about 20 percent of all pedestrian accidents involve a hit-and-run driver. With more than half of all hit-and-run accidents involving pedestrians, it is easy to surmise that drivers are far more willing to take a chance and run away from an accident if they believe that the victim cannot pursue.

In cases in which there are witnesses, it is more likely that the driver will be caught, but in some cases, the driver is never apprehended. It is important for pedestrian accident victims to be able to recover compensation to pay for medical bills and other expenses. If the driver remains at large, it may be up to the victim to make a claim against his or her own insurance company.
