University of Nevada Student Killed in Car Accident

The University of Nevada, Reno, lost a student in a tragic car accident recently, according to reports. Erica Greif, 23, was a nutrition and dietetics major as well as an employee at a local coffee shop and a competitive cyclist. She was also a member of the ZOCA-Halo Sports Hedrick Women's Racing Team and was en route to the Redlands Bicycle Classic in Highland, California at the time of the crash.

According to reports, the crash occurred on Highway 395 in Ridgecrest, California. While the accident was reported as a head-on crash that killed two others and hospitalized two victims, it is unclear what caused the crash. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Head-On Crashes Result in High Fatality Rates

Typically, a head-on crash occurs when one vehicle crosses the center line or median and strikes another vehicle. According to one report, about 18 percent of all fatal crashes involve a head-on collision. Despite the fact that head-on crashes are relatively rare, accounting for only two percent of all collisions, they account for a high percentage of roadway fatalities. Head-on crashes usually result from one of three causes:
  • A driver loses control due to weather conditions such as ice or rain or due to a malfunction such as a tire blowout.
  • A driver falls asleep at the wheel and drifts into another lane.
  • A driver is distracted and drifts across the road.
Other possible causes could be medical, as when someone has a seizure and loses control, or a deliberate attempt to crash. However, distraction and falling asleep are the most likely causes of head-on crashes.
