Nursing Home Abuse Widespread in Nevada

According to a recent report from a nursing home resident advocacy group, abuse, neglect and mistreatment of elderly nursing home residents is widespread in the state of Nevada. Brian Lee, the executive director of Families for Better Care, stated,

“Nevada represents what’s terribly wrong with nursing home care and oversight in America…State officials and industry representatives should be ashamed of their abysmal nursing home record.”

The report revealed that issues like bed sores, dehydration, malnutrition and even injury from falls are common among nursing home residents. The report also discovered that Nevada is one of two states in which every single nursing home facility was assessed with at least one or more deficiencies by inspectors. Sadly, 1 in 3 nursing homes were also evaluated to have a severe deficiency. This means that a resident suffered actual harm or was determined to be in imminent danger.

According to Marla McDade Williams, the deputy administrator for the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, the agency is responsible for holding centers accountable when serious deficiencies are found. Lee concluded that

“Unfortunately, Nevada did not levy one monetary penalty against a nursing home with severe deficiencies in 2012 although it did deny payment for new resident admissions to one nursing home. If you don’t have a regulatory system enforcing the laws, then it doesn’t incentivize the nursing homes to operate better for residents in cases of abuse and neglect.”

Lee also stressed that neglect is a leading cause of injuries in the state. He concludes that if direct care staffing levels are ramped up to three hours daily, there would be a rapid turnaround in the quality of nursing home care.
