Two Juveniles Hospitalized in Pedestrian Crashes

The New Year in Las Vegas began with two separate pedestrian crashes involving young people, both of whom are expected to recover. According to reports, one fifth-grade boy was transported to University Medical Center after he called police himself to tell them he had been hit by a vehicle while crossing the street near Owens Avenue and Lamb Boulevard. He is believed to have sustained a broken leg. In a separate incident that occurred almost simultaneously, a young girl was hit by a vehicle near Cimarron and Elkhorn and was transported to Centennial Hills Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There is no word or any arrests or charges for the drivers stemming from either case.

Pedestrian Accidents Affect the Young and Old

While anyone can be the victim of a pedestrian accident, young people and the elderly are at higher risk than some other age groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 percent of all pedestrian deaths and nine percent of all pedestrian injuries in 2012 occurred with victims 65 or older. That same year, 20 percent off all traffic deaths for children aged five to 15 involved pedestrian crashes. About half of all pedestrian crashes also involve alcohol. Older people are more likely to die in a pedestrian crash while younger people are more likely to be injured. The higher the speed of the vehicle, the more likely the pedestrian accident is to be fatal.

The High Cost of A Pedestrian Crash

Pedestrian crashes can be costly for the victims, particularly if an insurance company denies payment of compensation to the victim. This happens more often than most people realize. Insurance companies attempt to control costs by denying claims as frequently as possible and often attempt to blame the pedestrian victim for the crash. For someone who is injured and facing high medical bills along with the inability to work, this can be devastating. Fortunately, the attorneys at Bernstein & Poisson are here to help.
