Fatal Motorcycle Crash Closes Northbound I-15

Police have reported that a fatal motorcycle crash closed Interstate 15 North near Cheyenne Avenue for more than two hours. Witnesses say that a motorcyclist was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before hitting the back of a Toyota Corolla. A third vehicle, an Acura SUV, was also involved in the collision, but it is currently unclear how that driver was involved. The Nevada Highway Patrol said that the motorcyclist died at the scene. The collision is still under investigation by police.

Motorcyclists at Higher Risk on Roads

Studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Information Institute shows that 4,668 motorcyclists were killed in 2013. Another 88,000 were injured. Statistics show that motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in an auto accident and five times more likely to be injured when compared with passenger car occupants. With six times the fatality rate of passenger car occupants, it is clear that motorcyclists carry a much greater risk while on the road. Motorcyclists are at a greater risk for injury and death for several reasons:
  • Motorcycles are less visible
  • Motorcycles are less stable
  • Motorcyclists are not protected by a steel frame, seat belts or air bags
These factors lead up to motorcycle deaths, accounting for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2013. Despite the high risk, records show that there are 8.4 million motorcycles on the road with motorcycle riding growing in popularity each year.

What If I Have Been Injured in a Motorcycle Accident?

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, you likely face high medical bills, pain and suffering and lost income. You could also face future medical costs associated with rehabilitation or the inability to work due to your injuries. If you were not at fault for your accident, you may have legal grounds to seek compensation from the at-fault driver. A personal injury law suit in a civil court will allow you to legally pursue the at-fault party for damages. By proving that the at-fault driver was acting in a negligent way, you may be able to force the driver to settle. You could also win your case by a court ruling or a jury verdict.
