Car Accidents Are A Major Problem In The United States

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, reports that in 2013 there were 32,719 traffic-related fatalities and 2.3 million injuries from car crashes in the United States. Automobile crashes can result in a victim suffering one or more of the following types of injuries: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – Among the most common automobile accident-related injuries, a TBI occurs when the brain is jostled inside the skull by an impact such as that of a car crash. TBI is also among the most severe types of injuries, often causing life-long disability. Neck Injury –A neck injury can include whiplash or much more severe injuries resulting in paralysis. As with a TBI, a serious neck injury may result in life-long medical problems and expenses. Facial Injuries – A vehicle crash can result in major injuries to the face. These injuries occur when a motorist or passenger's face collides with virtually any surface in the car. This can include the dashboard, steering wheel, windshield, airbag when it is deployed during a crash, car seats if riding in the backseat or shattered glass when a collision sprays window glass into the car's cabin. As with injuries to head and neck, these range in seriousness from a few cuts and bruises to major lacerations and facial bone fractures. Psychological Injuries – Along with physical injuries, car accident victims can suffer long-lasting emotional distress. Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is fairly common after particularly bad automobile accidents.
