Child Killed in Automatic Gate Accident

An eight-year-old boy was killed when he became caught in an automatic gate at a Las Vegas housing community entrance, according to recent reports. Matthew Cattlet of the Village at Craig Ranch was killed when he was caught by a gate arm that was apparently triggered by another child riding a bicycle over the magnetic sensor.

Several children were interviewed by the police to determine what caused the accident. Apparently, the children often played by the gate, but Matthew was the only one who could fit his head through the small opening. One of the children who witnessed the accident dialed 911 to report it. Neighbors attempted to pull the child from the gate, but he died at University Medical Center from compression injuries.

Household Accidents Leading Cause of Childhood Death

According to the Centers for Disease Control, accidents in and near the home are one of the leading causes of death for children in the United States. Drowning, falls, burns, and poisoning are among the leading causes of death for children.

More than 12,000 people under 19 years of age die in accidents each year, and more than 9.2 million are treated in emergency rooms for non-fatal injuries. Males have higher injury death rates than females in all childhood age groups. The death rate for males overall is more than twice that of females.

While transportation-related injuries are still the number-one cause of death for children under 19, suffocation was the leading cause of death for children under the age of one, and drowning was the leading cause for children one to four years of age.
