Motorcycle Accident Facts

In all types of crashes, motorcycle riders have much higher rates of injury and death than the occupants of passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Information Institute, motorcycle deaths were down 6.4 percent in 2013 with 4,668 fatalities, and injuries were down 5.4 percent to 88,000. However, even with these decreases over 2012 figures, motorcyclists were still about 26 times more likely than the occupants of passenger vehicles to die in a crash and five times more likely to be injured as the result of a collision with a larger vehicle. Motorcycle riding has becoming increasingly popular not only for police officers but also for private citizens. Older and more affluent riders are making up a growing percentage of those on the road on motorcycles, leading to fears that advancing age may contribute both to the number of motorcycle crashes and the severity of injuries as a result of those crashes. While overall motorcycle accident deaths were down between 2012 and 2013, fatalities among motorcyclists over the age of 50 increased by 7.7 percent.
