Pedestrian May Have Jumped Concrete Barrier

Las Vegas Metro police say that a woman and her companion may have jumped over a concrete barrier at Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard shortly before she was hit by an eastbound car. According to reports, Flamingo was closed on the eastbound side for much the morning as police investigated the crash, which sent the woman to the hospital in critical condition. Her companion was uninjured.

Pedestrian Safety Is Of Primary Importance

While there are many laws that govern pedestrian safety, it is also important for pedestrians to use extreme caution, especially around busy roadways. Some ways that you can stay safe as a pedestrian include:
  • Cross the street in designated crosswalks and observe the rules of the road, including traffic signals. Crosswalk accidents do happen, but they are much less common than accidents that occur when a pedestrian is "jaywalking" or crossing in the middle of the street. You should also avoid crossing an intersection diagonally.
  • If there is no designated crosswalk, cross at an intersection whenever possible. Intersections are actually unmarked crosswalks where pedestrians have the right of way. It is much more likely that a car will be stopped in the normal course of traffic at an intersection than in the middle of the street.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. The best tools you have at your disposal are your five senses. Watch, listen and observe the traffic around you, being aware that a driver may not see you as clearly as you see him or her.
  • Wear bright clothing. Most pedestrian accidents that occur after dark or in rainy weather involve limited vision on the driver's part. Be sure to wear bright, reflective clothing if you must walk at night or carry a flashlight. If possible, avoid walking in foggy conditions or at other times when drivers may not be able to see you.
While it is up to pedestrians to promote their own safety, it is also important for victims to remember that they may be entitled to compensation for their injuries if they are struck by a car. Pedestrian victims could recover payment for their medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other expenses related to the accident through a personal injury lawsuit.
