4 Important Safety Tips for Bicyclists

Many Las Vegas residents enjoy bicycling because it’s environmentally friendly and provides excellent exercise. Unfortunately, bicycling isn’t always a safe method of transportation. Each year, bicycle accidents result in over 500,000 injuries and nearly 1,000 fatalities.

Review the following safety tips to protect yourself while on the road!

Tip #1: Wear a Helmet

This rule is critical. Approximately 50% of all bicycle riders don’t wear helmets, even though it reduces the risk of fatality by 93%. Unlike other methods of transportation, bicycles do not have built-in safety features to protect riders against falls or accidents. If you fall, a helmet may be your only defense against sustaining a traumatic brain injury.

Tip #2: Be Seen

A great way to protect yourself from cars is to make sure drivers can see you. There’s a reason so many bicyclists wear bright clothing and vibrant protective gear!  You can also attach reflective tape to your biking outfits for extra visibility.  With the number of distracted driving accidents increasing each year, it’s best to every precaution you can.

Tip #3: Avoid Road Hazards

When riding your bike, be aware of your surroundings and look out for safety hazards. After all, even cracked concrete can disrupt your ride and send you tumbling to the ground.

Hazards to avoid include, but are not limited to:

  • Cracked concrete
  • Potholes
  • Gravel
  • Wet roads
  • Oil slicks
  • Cobbled roads

A great way to avoid danger is to ride with friends. When riders are in a group, they can communicate avoidable hazards to each other.

Tip #4: Avoid Nighttime Rides

Riding at night is extremely dangerous for bicyclists. Not only is it more difficult for drivers to see you, it’s also more challenging for you to see and avoid road hazards. If you’re in a situation in which you have no choice but to ride at night, make sure to wear reflective tape and bright clothing, and stick to lighted bike paths whenever possible.
