Pedestrian Accidents Reach Deadly Numbers in 2017

Any type of car accident can be dangerous, but those involving pedestrians can be especially damaging. Unlike drivers, pedestrians lack the protection of vehicle, and if they are hit by a speeding, drunk, or careless driver the results could be fatal. Unfortunately, despite the deadly nature of these types of accidents, the danger seems to be on the rise. According to the state Office of Traffic Safety, 78 people were killed in pedestrian accidents in Clark County, Las Vegas in 2017, making it the deadliest year yet.

Understanding the Statistics

In 2016, a total of 57 people were fatally wounded in pedestrian accidents in Clark County, and 60 in the year before that. This county in Las Vegas Valley says the highest number of fatalities on record occurred in 2015, so seeing the fatality rate to skyrocket to 78 in 2017 was startling, to say the least. It is also important to remember that these records only include accidents that occur on public roads. Pedestrian accidents that take place in gated communities or on private roads are not included in these counts, so the actual number of fatalities is much higher.

All of the pedestrian accidents reported in 2017 were caused by oncoming traffic, and the 78 deaths accounted for 38% of all traffic-related deaths in Clark County. More than half of the pedestrians killed in traffic accidents were over the age of 55, the oldest of which was Donald Dodson, an 85-year-old who was struck outside of Hard Rock Hotel while crossing the street. However, not all of the pedestrians were older. The youngest victim was Jasmine Espana, an 11-year-old who was struck and killed by a garbage truck while crossing the street.

Although many of these accidents occurred when pedestrians were crossing the street, some occurred while people were walking on the sidewalk. Three children were killed when a car jumped the curb and hit them as they were walking along East Desert Inn Road.

Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

These accidents are often caused by driver inattention, failure to follow traffic laws, speeding, or driver intoxication. Despite the work of law enforcement and traffic safety advocates, these deadly crashes continue to harm pedestrians across Las Vegas Valley and beyond.
