Memorial Day Accidents

Approximately two million American soldiers have been killed while serving our country, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Memorial Day is a time to observe the sacrifices made our military men and women and reflect on the privileges that we enjoy thanks to them. In addition, Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial start to the summer season, whether it’s in the form of going to barbeques, taking vacations, or celebrating with friends and loved ones.

Unfortunately, Memorial Day is also associated with many injuries and fatalities caused by car accidents. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), at least 300 people have been killed in Memorial Day car accidents every year since 2011. So if you are traveling for the holiday weekend, or plan on driving at all, you need to be aware of the increased traffic, as well as the increased rate of drunk drivers on the road.

The following are several tips that can help you stay safe and avoid being involved in a car accident this Memorial Day weekend:

  • Choose a designated driver – If you plan on celebrating the holiday weekend by having more than a few drinks, have a designated driver pick you up and make sure you’re home safe and sound. If your designated driver caves into peer pressure and joins the festivities, you can rely on ridesharing apps (e.g. Uber or Lyft) or public transportation to get you home.
  • Avoid distractions – Aside from drunk driving, distracted driving has become one of the most common causes of car accidents in the United States. So avoid using your cellphone, eating, or even grooming while driving.
  • Avoid drowsy driving – If you’re driving on a long road trip, fatigue can result in a crash. If you’re too tired to drive, either have one of your passengers take over driving duties or stop and get some rest.
  • Host the party at your place – If you want to avoid driving, or leaving the comforts of your home altogether, why not have the party at your place instead. Keep in mind, make sure all of your guests have adequate ride arrangements and also offer them to sleep over if necessary.
