The Cameras Are Not Lying – Cameras In Ohio Facility Lead To Spike In Nursing Home Abuse Allegations
July 31, 2013
It is interesting, especially for parents, how we worry throughout life and who we worry about as we get older. When we are children, we may worry about pets or toys but in general we are worry-free. When we become parents, we begin to realize what our parents were talking about when they told us that they never stopped worrying about us. As we get older and our parents do the same, at some point we begin to worry about them because of their advanced age and the potential for them to have problems living alone.
At a certain point, we feel that there is no other option than to convince our parent or parents to move into an assisted living center. We only want to make sure that they are safe and that they are getting the care, medication and nutrition that they need. We also understand that for many different reasons we are not capable of providing that level of care. We expect to feel reassured when this difficult move is complete, but we still worry about what could happen to them. That’s partially because the scourge that is nursing home abuse has been on the rise across the country for several years. As we get older as a population, more people need nursing home beds and more people need to care for those who are using these beds. This places a strain on the entire industry that’s only going to become more intense as demand increases. This strain leads to too many mistakes in terms of hiring employees, training them and overseeing them.
Given this rise in nursing home abuse, different places around the country are allowing family members of nursing home residents to install hidden cameras in the rooms of their loved ones. This has been happening in Ohio, and partially because of these cameras in one facility the number of nursing home abuse rates has skyrocketed so far in 2013. According to an article that recently appeared in the Toledo Blade, 131 such complaints were made in the state during the first six months of 2013 as compared to only 74 during the first half of 2012. In addition, nearly half of those claims were made during June alone.
